Vitamin B12 is a crystalline compound essential to a number of micro-organisms and animals, including humans. So far as is known it is not present in higher plants. Pure vegetarian food is nearly free from vit. B12.

Physiological significance
Vitamin B12 appears to accelerate the whole digestive process and faciliates the assimilation of nutrients through the wall of the small intestine.
Dosage
A required amount of vitamin B12 is not known. According to the Central European feeding habits and even for vegetarians a vitamin B12 deficiency is rarely to be found. Vitamin B12 is known to prevent certain forms of anemia.
Toxicity
Extremely high dosing in animal experiments have not shown any secondary effects.
