Inositol

Occurence

also called inosit, myo-inosit

Inositol is like glucose a carbohydrate.
It was originally discovered more than 100 years ago in the urine of diabetics.

Inositol is a component in animal and vegetarian foodstuff. The human being consumes approximately 1g inositol per day through fruit and vegetables.

Significance of Inositol

It was only in 1957, that the significance of inositol regarding the growth of human and animal cells has been discovered. Bound to endogenic substances it also acts as a transmitter and component of cell membranes.

Despite this significance there is no indication that inositol necessarily needs to be supplied through food stuff. This might be due to the fact that the intestinal flora can produce inositol and there could possibly be internal organs which are able to synthesize inositol by themselves.

Although inositol does not have the status of a vitamin (= a vital substance), it can be found, even in high concentration, in mothers milk. Therefore the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics 1993 was discussing to add inositol also to artificial mothers milk compounds.
